Hall of Fame football coach

FERRIDAY – Services for Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame member Coach Johnny “Red” Robertson will be Friday. He died Feb. 5 at age 88.

He was a US Navy veteran of World War II and played college football at Northwestern State. He coached Ferriday High to four state football championships and his teams’ 54-game winning streak remains a state record. After leaving coaching he became a principal and administrator.

Survivors include his wife Jimmie and four sons.

Arrangements are by ¥oung’s.

Civic leader

NATCHITOCHES – Services for civic leader Mary Jean Swift Thomas will be Saturday. She died Jan. 30 at age 90.

She was a past president of the Service League, the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Society, the Association for Retarded Children and and active member of the Association for Preservation of Historic Natchitoches.

Survivors include her husband Gerard and six sons.

Arrangements are by Blanchard-St. Denis.

Educator, former NBA player

LOGANSPORT – Services for coach and former NBA player Bernard Waggoner will be Friday. He died Feb. 5 at age 85.

He was an all-conference basketball player at Northwestern State on a team which reached the NAIA semi-finals and was drafted into the NBA by the Baltimore Bullets. He was a teacher, coach and principal at Logansport High for more than 30 years and then a supervisor for DeSoto Parish schools.

Survivors include his wife Nell, a son and two daughters.
