Decorated aviator, test pilot

PORT SULPHUR – Services for retired aviator, test pilot and former parish commissioner Lr. Col. Edwin “Duffy” LaVigne will be Saturday. He died Feb. 13 at age 92.

He was a decorated fighter pilot during World War II and the Korean War and in the late 1950s was a test pilot with Chuck Yeager at Edwards AFB, Calif. He was twice shot down in air battle. He retired as director of manpower and organization for the US Air Force Europe.

He served two terns on the Plaquemines Commission Council.

Survivors include a son and two daughters.

Arrangements are by Mothe.

Retired prep coach

MONROE – Services have been held for legendary coach Elvin Spears. He died Feb. 7 at age 78.

He led the now-closed Richardson High to a state football championship before joining the West Monroe High staff. He later joined Carroll High and won state track titles in 1995 and 1997. Years earlier, he set a still-standing record by scoring 35 touchdowns in one season while playing for Carroll.
