27th Dist. Judge James Doherty, Jr. has given both sides until October to huddle on the double-murder case against Warren “Boo Boo” Gautreaux.

He is accused of the first-degree murders of Youric and Mary Ann Courville, stabbed to death in their Eunice home in January 2006.

Gautreaux was arrested in November 2011 after investigation in the cold case was reopened.

St. Landry Dist. Atty. Earl Taylor earlier this month, at the victims’ family’s request, advised the court and the defense that the death penalty would not be sought in the case.

Such notification is necessary in capital cases.

Subsequently, the Capital Assistance Project of Louisiana withdrew as counsel of record for Gautreaux and Jarvis Claiborne was named his court-appointed attorney.

Doherty has scheduled an Oct. 4 status conference update in the case as well as discussion between parties to set a trial date.
