"It's only Week 4 and the Tom Coughlin watch isn't on. But apparently, for ex-Steeler Jerome Bettis, it's never to early to start the Bill Cowher-to-the-Giants talk. Eight months after Bettis first pegged Cowher as Tom Coughlin's eventual replacement, he's done it again, this time in a column published on Sports Illustrated's website. In the story, Bettis insisted that Cowher will "be coaching again very soon." And he speculated that it might happen with the Giants, where a coaching change "could be imminent." "The situation is right for him to come back," Bettis writes. "He's a Hall of Fame coach, just 53, and could have a number of openings to choose from."
NFL Fines Two Tennessee Titans Over Penalties
Comment ספטמבר 30 Tennessean
"The NFL fined Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan and defensive end Jason Babin $5,000 each for unnecessary roughness penalties in last Sunday's game against the Giants. It's the second fine this season for Finnegan — he was docked $5,000 for his involvement in a fight with Steelers receiver Hines Ward in Week 2 — and the third for Babin. Finnegan, who was flagged for tackling Giants receiver Steve Smith by his helmet, said he wouldn't change the way he plays. "Nobody cares about fines,'' he said. "I don't care. It doesn't matter. I am going to keep playing the way I play and if we keep getting a FedEx every week (with a fine notice from the NFL) and win football games, I could care less"
Coughlin In Crisis, Tiki Says
Comment ספטמבר 30 New York Post
"Never shy about expressing his feelings about Tom Coughlin, Tiki Barber this week said the Giants coach "is at a crisis, his job is certainly in jeopardy" in video comments he made on Yahoo! Barber also said "I don't know if he's completely lost control of the team but it's definitely slipping away." The timing of these remarks is interesting, as Barber at halftime Sunday night will be part of the newly unveiled Ring of Honor at New Meadowlands Stadium."
Ravens Lose Out As Jets Swoop In And Sign Trevor Pryce
Comment ספטמבר 30 Washington Post
"A day after the Baltimore Ravens cut defensive end Trevor Pryce, intending to re-sign him in the kind of temporary move NFL teams do all the time, the New York Jets beat them to the punch and took him off the market. Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs tweeted the news, which also was reported by Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network, and the Ravens retweeted it, rendering moot Coach John Harbaugh's comment: "Trevor is a valuable part of this team," Harbaugh said. "He'll be back with us."
Clinton Portis Expects To Be In The Backfield Sunday
Comment ספטמבר 30 Washington Post
"Clinton Portis said Thursday that he expects to be in the backfield Sunday against the Eagles, but coaches apparently still have not talked with him about his role in the offense. Portis also addressed the end of his 27-yard run in Sunday's loss at St. Louis, a run in which he intentionally fell down. "If I had to have the chance to do it again, I would do the same thing with five people around me," he said. "Maybe I could've picked up four more yards. Four more yards I don't think are going to determine the outcome of that game." Portis had just two more carries after the long first-quarter gain. Ryan Torain saw the bulk of the playing time in the second half.
Redskins Looking At Receiver Help
Comment ספטמבר 30 Washington Post
"On Tuesday, Washington coaches ran at least two free agent receivers through workouts at Redskins Park. You don't have to strain your eyes too hard to read between the lines here: There's room for an upgrade among the current group of receivers on the 53-man roster. According to reports, the Redskins held tryouts for Keenan Burton, a University of Kentucky product who most recently played for St. Louis in 2009, and former Baltimore receiver Demetrius Williams, who was released at the end of the preseason. Clearly, Redskins coaches believe they need help at receiver, which might not bode well for Devin Thomas and Roydell Williams. Thomas has shown himself to be a solid kick returner.
