The Fourth of July, the day our country won its independence, the day we celebrate the sacrifice that it took to be free; we remember this day in the most spectacular of ways.

Watching a display of fireworks is a way to sit down and ponder on the events that took place in order to be the nation we are today; while also being able to experience one of the most amazing and memorable events that we have in our city of Eunice.

According to former Eunice Mayor Kenneth Peart, years back the city of Eunice tried to outlaw the use of fireworks altogether.

Peart said, “This did not sit well with many citizens of the city and therefore, only penny rockets were outlawed because of their constant act of starting fires due to the fireworks shooting off in random directions and users being unable to locate the firework.”

Peart said the city buys its fireworks direct.

Eunice has become a destination for many as the Fourth of July approaches.

Peart was the “lone one” who introduced the city to the city’s fireworks spectacular, “I have always been a firm believer in the spirit of fireworks on the Fourth of July.”

Peart has gotten deeper into the world of fireworks, doing shows in Boston, Mass., at the Kentucky Derby, and much more.

Peart will once again be donating his time and equipment to put together the special night of magnificent fireworks to share with the citizens of Eunice.

People come from all around to witness the display put on at the Eunice Recreational Park on Sittig Road. “Every year we increase it,” said Peart, pointing out that they try to excel and exceed everyone’s expectations every year with a bigger and better show than that of years before.

The fireworks show will be held at the Eunice Recreational Park grounds on Wednesday, July 4, beginning at 9 p.m.

Getting there early is recommended.

Some fireworks tips from the National Safety Council:

Use fireworks outdoors only.

Always have water handy. (A hose or bucket).

Only use fireworks as intended. Don’t try to alter them or combine them.

Never re-light a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.

Use common sense. Spectators should keep a safe distance from the shooter and the shooter should wear safety glasses.

Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Have a “designated shooter.”

Only persons over the age of 12 should be allowed to handle sparklers of any type.

Do not ever use homemade fireworks of illegal explosives: They can kill you! Report illegal explosives to the fire or police department in your community.

And note these special safety tips, if using sparklers:

Always remain standing while using sparklers.

Never hold a child in your arms while using sparklers.

Never hold, or light, more than one sparkler at a time.

Never throw sparklers.

Sparkler wire and stick remain hot long after being used.
