Eunice schools get passing LEAP grade; East, Eunice Elementary excel

Eunice schools passed and one school, East Elementary, excelled in all the fourth grade LEAP testing categories this spring.

Eighth graders at parish, state and local levels remained at an average scoring.

Results from the La. Dept. of Education show the elementary schools are in the average percentile in English, math, social studies and science, showing little growth level from 2011.

East Elementary and Eunice Elementary, had passing rates in the 90+ percentile in all categories.

Glendale Elementary had 90+ percentile rankins except in Mathematics where it was in the 8th percentile.

Highland Elementary excelled in English with a 90 percentile scoring, showing an increase of 5 percent from last year.

Here are the state-wide passing percentages for the four elementary testing categories:

English, 75; math, 73; science, 68; and social studies, 68.

State-wide passing percentages for the four elementary schools last year were English, 76, math 74, science 66, and social studies 73.

The parish rates:

English, 73 percent passing; math, 65; science, 59, and social studies, 63.

Eunice schools’ scores are:

East--English, 97 percent passing; math, 97; science, 93; social studies, 95.

Eunice--English, 98 percent passing; math, 97; science, 92; social studies, 98.

Glendale--English, 90 percent passing; math, 84; science, 91; social studies, 95.

Highland--English, 90 percent passing; math, 76; science, 59; social studies, 66.

Two local elementary schools ranked above the 90th percentile. East Elementary, scores rose in each subject. Last year East scores were: English, 83 percent; math 72; science 77; social studies, 81.

This year’s scores in all subjects at East Elementary were in 90+ percentile.

Highland Elementary’s English score of 90 percent increased from last year’s test score of 85 passing.

Eunice Elementary Principal Irma Trosclair said, “We are so excited with our students’ results. The Eunice Elementary teachers are experts at providing laser-focused instruction based on student needs and mandated standards.

“Our students, teachers and parents take very seriously the importance of this assessment and work hard all year to be fully prepared for end year state assessments. Consistency and focus in instruction is key.”

At Eunice Junior High eighth graders scored 72 percent in English, 58 percent in Mathematics, 55 percent in Science and 49 percent in Social Studies.

The state-wide passing percentages for eighth-graders are:

English, 67; math, 64; science, 61; and social studies, 67.

The parish rates:

English, 67; math, 55; science, 53; and social studies, 56.

A comparison of St. Landry Parish to Acadia Parish 4th grade LEAP testing scores, Acadia Parish scores were parish-wide: English, 69 percent passing; math, 69, science, 61; social studies, 56.

Acadia Parish 8th graders scored English, 66 percent passing; math, 58; science, 61; and social studies, 64.
