A Eunice police officer shot and killed a pit bull when it charged toward him Monday afternoon.

The officer was called to the Pearl Street scene after a free-running pit attempted to get to a dog being walked by its owner, who called police.

When the officer arrived, according to reports, he observed a pit bull properly chained in a yard.

A second dog, however, came from behind a camper.

The dog had a restraining tether but it was not secured to anything and the animal charged the officer, who felt he had no choice but to shoot it.

Police have responded to several calls in the past few days regarding loose, vicious dogs, including one Tuesday that had people trapped in their St. Joseph Street house while it sat on the porch.

In most instances, the impounding officer has been able to snare the canines.

Police reminded residents that allowing a dog to run free is against city code.

How is the officer supposed to know that a charging pit bull is friendly and loving?

Well about the pit bull running around that the cops killed. I hope he's happy with himself after killing my dog. My family has been really hurt by this, he was not a mean dog at all he was a very friendly, loving dog that would not hurt a fly. But, I guess because it was a pit bull people automatically think that all of them are mean dogs.I really want to know how the cop would feel if someone done this to his dog? How do you think your kids would feel? Mine are very upset!I guess it don't matter because we cant bring him back.
