Erica Andrus was on the court when the St. Edmund Lady Jays earned three back-to-back district basketball titles from 1993-1995 and advanced to the state quarterfinals.

Fast forward to today, her last name is Zaunbrecher and she is again on the court as the Lady Jays won their first district title since she was in high school.

Zaunbrecher is serving as an assistant coach with first-year head coach Nicole Dooley as the Lady Jays begin the playoffs at 6 p.m. Thursday against Varnado.

“It is a great group of girls and I am glad they are realizing their potential,” Zaunbrecher said. “They have come a long way and they are seeing just what they can do.

“It is great to see the way their faces light up and how excited they are,” she said. “They have completely turned things around from last year.

“They are really playing well and working well together as a team,” she said. “

Zaunbrecher understands what playing as team really means, as after a stellar high school career she was on the first LSU Eunice basketball team (1999-2000) and then stayed as an assistant coach under Dr. Kathy Barlow.

She finished her senior season as the Offensive Player of the Year, scoring 15.2 points per game and earned All-District and All-State honors while leading the team to a school-record 20-12 finish.

“We had Mandy Miller, Christine Wall, Nikki Theriot, Jessica Darbonne, and Elizabeth Bowie,” she said of the team her senior season coached by her mother, Rachel Andrus. St. Edmund lost to Ridgewood 54-41 in the quarterfinals.

“We were older than them as we were juniors and seniors,” the assistant coach said, comparing district championship seasons. “With just one senior, they are impressive and the future should be bright. It is good to see them win.

“This first year with the new gym, it is great to see a home playoff game,” she said. “But this is just another game for us.”
