For Eunice High head coach Paul Trosclair and St. Edmund head coach Thomas David, the shift means football season is right around the corner.
“We had a real good summer,” Trosclair said. “The senior group did a real good job of putting in the extra time and getting their stuff done.”
The Bobcats have 18 returners and Trosclair is looking to them for leadership.
The teams cannot put pads on until next week, but Trosclair said the team spent the summer learning and working out
“We want to get 100 percent of the schemes in,” Trosclair said of the pre-season practices.
“We got about 90 percent in during the spring so we feel we have a pretty good base of knowledge,” he said.
“We also have to deal with the conditioning part,” the Bobcat coach said. “It is brutally hot so I am worried about the heat and the sun.”
Eunice will scrimmage Iota and Kaplan on Thursday, Aug. 16 at Bobcat Field.
Eunice will take on Beau Chene in the St. Landry Parish Jamboree at Donald Gardner Stadium at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24.
At St. Edmund, David said the summer workouts were well attended and he was pleased with the majority of the team’s participation.
With six seniors, David said he putting a lot on them as leaders.
“They have stepped up and even though they are not a real big group, there is a core who will do a great job of setting the right example for the rest of the team.
“We really need them to step up and really push it.”
David said he will also expect a lot from his 10 juniors and 10 sophomore players.
There are also 17 freshmen, according to the coach.
“We are young and we will spend the next few weeks trying to develop leaders in the younger players.”
St. Edmund is scheduled to scrimmage Elton before facing Hanson Memorial in the Opelousas Kiwanis Jamboree at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23.
