St. Landry District Attorney Earl Taylor said his decision not to seek the death penalty for Warren "Boo Boo" Gautreaux was based on the wishes of his alleged victims' family.

Gautreaux is charged with the January 2006 stabbing deaths of Youric and Mary Ann Courville in their Eunice home.

"The decision not to seek the death penalty was made after discussions with the victims' family," he said, noting their wish was for the state not to seek Gautreaux's execution.

Taylor notified Dist. Judge James Doherty, Jr. and the defense of the decision on July 31.

In first-degree murder cases, the prosecution must advise if it intends to seek capital punishment.

Gautreaux was arrested in November 2011 after investigation of the murders was reopened.
