A carjacker allowed a man to take his child from the vehicle before taking off in it early Wednesday.

According to reports, a Basile man was at the West Laurel Tropical Car Wash when a white man wearing a mask and brandishing a knife came upon him and demanded his car.

The victim turned a pressure washer on the bandit but it did not turn him away, police said.

The victim then asked if he could get his young child out of the 2001 white Firebird before the desperado took off in it.

The culprit agreed. Leaning into the car, the victim instead reached for a .38 revolver, police said, and the robber told him not to make that mistake.

The victim then got the child out and the carjacker left headed west on Laurel.

Moments later a state trooper happened by and the victim flagged him down. The trooper pursued but could not locate the vehicle before having to resume his trip elsewhere.

The suspect is described as about 5’8” or 5’9” tall, having blonde hair and green eyes. He was wearing a white and green T-shirt.

Records do not indicate what kind of mask he was wearing.
