Trevor Reese, 17, pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity at his July 8 arraignment.
He is accused of stabbing and slashing the throat of the boy as he rode his bike on a trail near the Bluffs community, where Reese and his family lived.
Sheriff’s detectives seized the DVDs of the first three seasons of “Dexter”, a TV show about a police analyst who is also a serial killer, during a search of the Reese home, The Advocate reports.
Dexter kills other killers who he believes are not being brought to justice.
Prosecution in the case is pending reports from two court-appointed psychiatrists who are studying Reese’s mental condition at the time of the crime and his capacity to assist in his defense.
According to the case file, an unidentified woman told police she was biking with the child, his mother and brother and others on the trail.
She rode ahead of the group and saw Reese standing on the trail.
He was holding something but she could not tell what. She spoke to him, but he did not answer.
She rode on, heard screaming, returned to where she had seen Reese and found the child lying in a pool of blood with his mother trying to save his life.
According to statements in the record, Reese father told investigators the boy arrested is not his son, that there was something wrong with him.
